March 12th Wine Tasting – Whites of Italy

The great Noshies European Expedition continues on! This week Noshies is pouring some of the best white wines that Italy can showcase. And because Spring is just around the corner, we here at the finest little wine shop on the Palouse, are featuring the Pinot Grigio grape and all of its white and bright splendor. It’s Pinot Grigio night at Noshies!

Hailing from the very back of the “thigh” (almost the butt cheek) of Italy is a plucky little region called Fruili. This beautiful region that borders Slovenia and Austria is the home to some of the most tasty ham dishes you’ll ever try. Fitting since the first wine in our “Whites of Italy” tour is the Scarpetta Pinot Grigio DOC Fruili. This soft white wine has a gentle acidity and smells exactly like it tastes, with notes and flavors of sweet melon and wet minerality and stone.

Next, we wander toward the region of Veneto, home of Venice, romantic boat rides in canals and the LaTorretta Pinot Grigio. This wine bears notes of green apple and pear, and finishes with flavors of  sweet honeydew melon drenched in fresh squeezed lime juice. If you’re feeling like porkchops or some light buttery pasta with lemon and capers, then this wine is a must have for a pairing.

Finally, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy (right in the “hock” of the boot, north of Veneto, west of Fruili, for those of you following along at home) will we find the last great wine of the “Whites of Italy” Tour. The Barone Fini Pinot Grigio Valdadige is a soft and subtle wine of body and character. With great aromas of honey dipped melon and bright sunny minerality, this wine is great just by itself, by the pool, or couch, wherever you feel like having a great glass of chilled Pinot Grigio!
