Exploring Germany Wine Tasting, February 2/17/22!

Welcome back Noshies Fans! This week we are going to explore the lovely country of Germany and the beautiful wines this land produces.

Up first we are going to try Carl Ehrhard’s Blanc De Noirs (which translates to white of blacks). This process allows wine makers to turn red wine grapes into white wine. The way this process works is when red grapes are pressed and the juice is allowed to ferment after being separated from the skins, the result is white wine, referred to as “blanc de noirs” meaning a white wine from dark grapes. This elegantly created wine is dry and crisp and with loads of acidity which makes this wine ideal for any cheese, charcuterie, seafood and pasta dishes!

Next on the adventure we are going to try a customer favorite and repeat offender. This Rose comes from Pinot Noir grapes and has a lovely light ruby color. We are going to enjoy a beautiful bouquet of strawberries, raspberries, cherries and some grapefruit. The wine was grown in Germany’s Rhine River Valley giving it’s fresh aroma and zippy finish.

Lastly on the tasting, we are going to try Germany’s favorite grape; Riesling. This vastly planted grape through out the land was once close to eradicated now it is considered the superstar of white wine in the world. On the nose we are going to smell strong notes of honey and honeycomb, strong ripe peaches and a dash of oak, while on the finish the acidity and sweetness of this wine creates a beautiful marriage.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Cheers!

March 12th Wine Tasting – Whites of Italy

The great Noshies European Expedition continues on! This week Noshies is pouring some of the best white wines that Italy can showcase. And because Spring is just around the corner, we here at the finest little wine shop on the Palouse, are featuring the Pinot Grigio grape and all of its white and bright splendor. It’s Pinot Grigio night at Noshies!

Hailing from the very back of the “thigh” (almost the butt cheek) of Italy is a plucky little region called Fruili. This beautiful region that borders Slovenia and Austria is the home to some of the most tasty ham dishes you’ll ever try. Fitting since the first wine in our “Whites of Italy” tour is the Scarpetta Pinot Grigio DOC Fruili. This soft white wine has a gentle acidity and smells exactly like it tastes, with notes and flavors of sweet melon and wet minerality and stone.

Next, we wander toward the region of Veneto, home of Venice, romantic boat rides in canals and the LaTorretta Pinot Grigio. This wine bears notes of green apple and pear, and finishes with flavors of  sweet honeydew melon drenched in fresh squeezed lime juice. If you’re feeling like porkchops or some light buttery pasta with lemon and capers, then this wine is a must have for a pairing.

Finally, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy (right in the “hock” of the boot, north of Veneto, west of Fruili, for those of you following along at home) will we find the last great wine of the “Whites of Italy” Tour. The Barone Fini Pinot Grigio Valdadige is a soft and subtle wine of body and character. With great aromas of honey dipped melon and bright sunny minerality, this wine is great just by itself, by the pool, or couch, wherever you feel like having a great glass of chilled Pinot Grigio!

March 5th Wine Tasting – Italy

The greatest little wine shop on the Palouse continues it’s journey across the European countryside. Having jus sampled the best red and white wines that France has to offer, the wine tour of Europe presses on. We head now to Italy, home of some of the best food and wine on the planet.

Starting in the beautiful northern region of Piedmont (that’s the thigh of the “boot” for those who are directionally challenged), where beef is king and the barbera grape is his queen. The Scarpetta Barbera del Monferrato is as delicious as it is savory. Beautiful notes of plum and porcini mushrooms dominate the aroma and it finishes soft and supple on the palate with low tannin, a medium body and juicy acidity. This pairs perfectly with pizza or an Italian seasoned steak.

We head south the beautiful and famous Tuscany (right around the knee of the “boot” for those of you following along). Here, Sangiovese reigns supreme, with its bright notes of red cherries and a tonic-like herbaceousness. The Cala Civetta Sangiovese di Toscano hold true to type, with light ruby colors and fleshy red cherries. On the nose, you’ll get a numbing brew of basil and thyme with the soft splash of acidity and ripe red fruit. For those hunters among you, this pairs well with game birds and pretty much anything with tomato sauce.

Finally, all the way to arch in the foot of the boot of beautiful Italia, we head to the province of Taranto, in a little region called Manduria. Here, the best is saved for last as the delicious and rich Felline Primitivo di Manduria is served. This decadent wine has notes of Bing cherry, fresh Italian herbs and soft French oak. This wine is best served with roasts, for those of you who have patience to cook, but no patience to enjoy this delicious wine.
